The team like the baseball and Olympic teams is grossly overrated.

Typical Japanese sports program, big fish in a small pond syndrome. Nothing to get excited about. I think the locals are still coming to grips with the Olympic tournement failure. Getting whooped by the USA was a real stinger considering the J media hyped that as a sure fire win. This is more of the same, I mean Bahrain ? Just how far has any of these "Asian" teams advanced once the WC tournement begins ? The real folley in the Asian tournement though is to watch how far Fifa will help Japan to advance. Fifa knows Japanese fans will travel well, so it's important to get Japan into the finals. Last time out we saw dodgy refereeing and Japan being awarded a nuetral location game against a team it was destined to lose to at their venue. Some really comical stuff from Fifa.

I agree. In the lead up to World Cup 2006, there were some dodgy refereeing going on in the African qualifying campaign, the Asia qualifiers, and the CONCACAF qualifiers. I really hope they clamp down on all the "home-ground" obvious refereeing payoffs. It is a laugher, when some of the referees are from countries which have teams with a vested interest in the tournament. Fifa should spend the money in order to hire refs that will come from other continents.

they need to sell tickets and yes have sponsors too...hmm Japan has always an available reason should they lose. Just don't get into the hype, Japan team is still a long way to go. Everyone knows they need to sell soccer stuffs and new viewers outside Europe as these things are now being ignored..in short East Asia
