Olympic flame reaches peak of Mt Everest

RONGBUK MONASTERY —

A team of Chinese climbers succeeded in carrying the Olympic torch to the top of Mt. Everest on Thursday. Live television footage showed the team holding up a specially designed torch along with Chinese and Olympic flags Thursday on the 8,848-meter peak. ‘‘Long live Beijing!’’ shouted one climber, according to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency.

The Olympic torch has traveled through 20 countries since the beginning of the relay in late March amid a series of pro-Tibetan demonstrations. It began the mainland China leg of the relay Sunday in the southern province of Hainan, following the torch run in the Chinese territories of Hong Kong and Macao. The torch will travel through more than 100 cities and regions in the Chinese mainland before arriving in Beijing on Aug 6.
