TOKYO —
Tsunami Tenkai will meet WBA super flyweight champion Zhang Xi Yan of China in a women’s world title bout next February in Tokyo, her Yamaki gym said Monday.
Tenkai, 24, an Okinawa native who is ranked No. 1, will be the first Japanese female boxer to make a bid for a WBA title in the match against Zhang scheduled for Feb 5 at Korakuen Hall, according to the Yamaki gym. Current Japanese female boxing champions include Momo Koseki, who holds the WBC atomweight crown—the lightest category—and WBC interim light flyweight champion Naomi Togashi.
