If he's allowed to participate in the London Olympics it would be the most unfair ruling ever. Remember that Romanian gymnast (I forgot her name) who lost her gold medal because of some common (off the shelf) cold medicine containing a substance allowed by gymnastics committee but not allowed by the Olympic committee?

But what has he done wrong? I really can't understand what Phelps is talking about? "regrettable behaviour?" What's he talking about?

I just wish he was man enough to stand up and say it: "I smoked POT".

I mean don't apologise for "being photographed inhaling from a devise used for smoking marijuana"!

Don't apologise for your "poor judgement".

Come on Phelpsie, SAY IT! You broke the law. Admit it!

That would be foolish. Drug use is still a crime. His lawyers and managers probably crafted the apology for him so that it would be as vague as possible, while still sounding sincere.

Still, Phelps definitely needs to do a little image control: pot smoking, drunk driving, Hip-hop listening, stripper dating. It doesn't befit a national sports hero who has to appeal to middle-aged, Midwestern women as well as the general male and youth audience. In other words, he has to satisfy the figure skating crowd as well as the X-games crowd.

Phelps was arrested for drunken driving. He pleaded guilty, apologized and again said he wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

Looks like he kept that promise. He made a different mistake.

What he should have said is that he apologized for breaking the law while staying mum on his stand to the substance. It would have placated the spoonsors and been a nod to the majority of Americans his age who favor legalization.

The companies that sponsor him are not fools (at least I didn't see any banks listed), and they probably figure that any overreaction from them and they risk being seen as out-of-touch by the customers they are trying to reach. He could trying using a little better judgment about where he partakes in the future though!

Michael Phelps has publicly apologized for nothing more than “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” ! He has not admitted to smoking marijuana, free basing, or snorting cocain. This article goes out on a limb here sayiung he is "inhaling." Really now, for all we know the regrettable behaviour and bad judgement may have been just picking up a bong and holding to his lips. I for one have seen the photo... is he "inhaling" or just puffing his cheeks or possibly even blowing "into" the pipe ? Some of us learned a long time ago that blowing into a cigarette, cigar, or marijuana joint gives the impression of inhaling, great trick when the peer pressure becomes too much. In short, "nobody" knows if he's inhaling or not, and he hasn't admitted to marijuana use or flunked a marijuana test to date.

Mr.Galactic, Blowing into a bong causes the water inside to shoot out. I've heard that is a very unpleasant thing to have happen.

Sweeney dude is like, really some kinda hater. Why does he gotta be like that, hatin on the O-man and shet.
