May be ref just said jokingly... 'shine'... commonly used/misused word in Japanese Variety Shows.

Telling someone to die in English would be just that and no more. Not such a big problem. F off and die! A bit like "Shut your face..."
In Japan use of this expression is and has been a massive problem in schools and in society. It has also been banned in the media. To tell someone to die using this particular word can be the initiation of bullying, removal from the peer group, a denial of any basic right to existence, and seen as discrimination. It's a huge insult into the bargain. English "F off" is mild by comparison, IMHO.

We usually swap stories and laugh at how ignorant 99% of all players are about the Laws. It's funny how quickly a player I send off for criminal conduct can concoct a story about how, once again, he was an innocent victim of the Evil Referees(TM). Dude, you spit on that guy's shoes, not me!
That said, I think I'll put a note out to my referee mailing list: 「死ね!」is not the appropriate response to a dissenting Japanese player. I don't want to go to court over a "human rights abuse" case.

The player shouldn't have been talking back in the first place. Good on the ref for showing some backbone and dishing some back.
Yellow cards should be sin binning offenses - 10 minutes off the field, and remonstrating with the referee should be a penalizable offense.
Until that becomes a reality, telling whingy girly players to die seems like a reasonable substitute.
Peace

At the risk of being declared "off-topic", they are in US high school rules (NFHS). A player being cautioned must leave the field and cannot re-enter until the next stoppage of play, assuming all the NFHS' wacky requirements for substitution eligibility have been met.
I think telling the guy to die might have been a bit off, but thinking back on some of the abuse I've taken, I can't place too much blame on him. One keeper actually threw his gloves at me after a 'missed' offsides call ... wasn't sure if he was challenging me to a duel or what.

Soccer is my main sport, but professional soccer players are generally girlie scum. What a whinger. Take it like a man and give it back if it upsets you. If it were a rugger player he would probably have replied 'yes sir' to the ref (English rugger players often address the ref as 'sir' believe it or not).

Maybe he said "dive".

Uemoto is that chubby defender isn't he ? Maybe the ref said 'diet'.

Seriously though, there are not many soccer players that young kids can look up to. They are overpaid and soft. And I'm a huge soccer fan from England. Beckham surprisingly is not a bad example as he made it from nothing and has taken a lot of stick along the way.
American football players - tough but a bit crazy to take those kind of hits. Rugby players - used to be hard and no nonsense but the professional game is spoiling them. Boxing - yes, tough. Judo - no nonsense. Baseball players - often overpaid but straightforward guys. Ice Hockey - those guys are not normal but tough.
