The Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee has declined to endorse testing for viruses, which can cause stomach and respiratory ailments that could cost an athlete a gold medal.

Why?

Why?

Because Brazil paid umpteen million dollars in bribes to IOC officials to get the Olympics, and these officials will of course do nothing to bite the hand that feeds them.

It's absolutely sickening to read about the condition of waters in Brazil, and to imagine doing anything in them at all. The nation should be ashamed of itself. And if it does nothing save but to put lipstick on it leading to and during the Olympics, certainly nothing will be done to better the problem after the Olympics are done (at least, not before irreparable damage is done... if not already). My only hope is that, since it seems impossible they can improve things very much, they improve methods of dealing with waste so that it's not just ignored again when the Olympics pack up and leave town.

"Rio Olympic organizers acknowledge it will be impossible to clean the area’s waters by the time the Games open in 10 months, a promise they made in winning the Olympic bid in 2009."

What BS. There was no "promise," it was a bold-faced lie. Rio organizers knew they wouldn't do anything because they knew the brides would cover it and the IOC never moves a venue. Tokyo is following suit with the stadium and Fukushima which is supposedly under control. I have come to hate the Olympics as it is little more than a money-grab for government swine. I feel for the athletes and the original charter of the Games but I hate the Olympics.
