I'm glad Rogge explained the scoring before the debate begins!

IOC has no moral authority to speak about fairness. My opinion is that Plushenko was the real athlete while Lysacek was dancing ballet on ince.

There should indeed be higher points awarded for better and more difficult jumps, otherwise this event should be eliminated and only ice dancing kept.

Doubt that there will ever be a perfect system.

Cheating in figure skating was common in the past. Look at 1980 when Linda Frantiane got cheated out of her gold to a communist East German.

Is the new system prevents cheating? Time will tell. It's only been around for 8 years and before that the pairs and Ice Dancing always went to the Soviets.

Evgeni Plushenko has complained bitterly about the results of the men’s competition, where the Russian finished second to American Evan Lysacek despite being the only top contender to land a clean quadruple jump.

Not American, and I have no real axes to grind. That being said, however, I don't really go in for competitors who whine when they lose. This Russian chappy was in the media before the event trying to wind up his American rival over the issue of how many times he could or could not pirouette. Now after the event, this same Russian chappy is whining because he lost. My advice is simple, get over it and grow up.

Plushenko's beef isn't with Lysacek, who won as the judging rules are set out. His beef is with the judging rules in general, because they favor artistry over athleticism (in his opinion).

That in mind, I don't think the IOC chief's statement really addresses what Plushenko is saying.

Everything should be taken into context, e.g. how and when the jumps, spins, steps, etc. are made. One jump is not a whole choreography make, and there has to be balance, not just doing all the jumps in the first couple of minutes then coasting the rest. Not doing a quad certainly reduces one's margin of error, but that just means one has to do everything else perfect and maybe even need help with the other competitors wobbling a bit in their techniques. That just means there is more than one way to win a competition. One could win with a homerun, or one could win by stringing together hits. One could win like the Yankees, or one could win like the Ham Fighters.

Plushenko was robbed of his gold medal! :(

isn't the olympics suppose to be an athletic competition? same thing happened to mao-chan.

Figure skating judging is always an issue. I was listening to the European broadcast of the women's final and they said that Nagasu had the 2nd best long program and the judges had her as the 5th best on the day.

There are always mysteries with judging this stuff.

They're focusing on the wrong competition. The medal that should be in dispute should be the women's bronze medal.

Figure skating is not ice acrobatics nor is it ballet on ice, exhibition skating or ice dancing. Plushenko is a bit too sure of himself. One clean quad does not make a gold medalist. Period.

TokyoGas: I'm with you(or the European commentators). Nagasu didn't get bronze because she was 16 and first time olympian.

paulinusa,

You will see Mirai Nagasu in 2014, but I doubt that Rochette will even compete for a medal or enter in 2014. 28 is considered a grandma age for ladies figure skating and Nagasu will only be 20 in 2014.

There's no point fighting for a bronze. Mirai's next goal is for the gold.

I do not understand how you can cheat.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

If the judging was impeccable, Miki Ando would have got the gold.

Is he on the defensive? So soon?

The judging was terrible.

Nagasu didn't get bronze because she was 16 and first time olympian.

I guess everyone's forgotten about Tara Lipinski. Guess how old she was when she first entered the Olympics, and guess what medal she won. Bam, there goes the conspiracy theories.

Judging by humans can never be considered impeccable. Sounds like they are being defensive.
