    @smodgy,

    Why is it called the world series when it is a US only tournament?

    Cause Canada can be in it, too.

    Why is it called the world series when it is a US only tournament?

    Because 'world' does not always map with the physical/geographical world. Just say 'the world of music' the world of theater' the 'world of high school'.

    the MLB Cafe in Tokyo sucks. they don't even show the World Series games live?! what's the point of opening a MLB cafe then?

    it's called the World Series because (i think) that when it first was created, basically only the US played baseball then so it was fitting to call the winner the champions of the world (at that time). So of course it progressed to become popular in Japan, Korea, and all of Latin America, not to mention many in Netherlands, Australia, and South Africa, etc . Why the Olympic Committee dimwits took it off the venue for the 2012 London Olympics and put in golf(?!) is beyond me. Must have been political for sure.

    Must have been political for sure.

    So, they're dimwits but they are also political (manoeuverers)?

    It's called the World Series because there are certain home runs which, like the first shot fired in our glorious war for independence, are "heard 'round the world."

    I thought everybody knew that.

    And before ya gets all huffy you should know that it ain't only Americans who jack the long ball.

    By the way not all of Latin America plays baseball, give a ball and a bat to a Brazilian or an Argentine and see what they can do with it, nothing, they are mostly crazy about soccer. Renteria is probably from the Dominican Republic, they have great baseball players there on that half of the island.

    I thought the "World" in "World Series" referred to a newspaper that sponsored the finals series at the time. The newspaper - called The World Report (I think) - sponsored it only if it could attach it's name to it. Hence the World Series.

    I think ironchef has it right. The modern World Series began in 1903 and baseball was basically not played internationally at that time.

    A lot of upsets this year. And that's why they play the game. Among the playoff teams, the SF Giants spent the fewest days on first place and did not even secure a playoff berth until the last day of the season.

    Get rid of your star who is a locker room cancer, success follows.

    A famous urban myth however it's not true

    Renteria is from Colombia. People are dancing and burning furniture in the streets here in San Francisco. Just like when the 49er's won the Superbowl in 1982. Go Giants.

    The World Series Championship Victory Parade will take place Wednesday morning in downtown San Francisco. I plan to be there proudly wearing black and orange - anyone else?? Great job, Giants! You made NorCal very proud. Remember to always Fear the Beard!!!
