who cares what the "fans" say, it is what his value was to the Sumo association... which was huge. His ranking as third in history should be enough... but he is a "gaijin" so he has to pay some penalty... if wasn't driven out now, he would have easy been at the top in a couple years.

should get more. 1.2 million for a sport that supposed to be a national sport. Some third rate baseball players get that in the US. Should be a disgrace that it is only so little.

sumo is just so boring these days. Was much more interesting in the Akebono/konishki/ Taka-Waka days. Asa had a personality and tried to liven things up. His retirement pay is fully deserved. Hope to see him in K1 soon.

So, the idea of someone retiring under a cloud but receiving a hefty golden handshake is not commensurate with Japanese culture? Indeed.

bobobolinski, yes totally. Get fired from your company and get unemployment benefit's after 7 days. Quit and wait 90 days. This for many is a great way to travel around Japan and still get paid. about 70% of your monthly salary. So, yes! Japan is all about paying off people.

Of course they do. He's a foreign born Yokozuna, and even though he's earned it and more, he's not a REAL Japanese! Racism, again, raises its ugly head. They should just drive their big black vans home.

To be honest, Mr. Moriyama and Mrs. Higuchi do have a point. But Mr. Moriyama and Mrs. Higuchi are just everyday punters on the street, so what difference does this article make ? None whatsoever.

would love to have seen him put takanohana in his place in the dohyo... sumo seems so boring without him now... well done to the normal ranting from the stereotypical Japanese kicking him now he is gone.. how utterly normal of you.

How much money has The champ raked in for the sumo association over the years? plenty, a whole lot more than a 120 million yen. He deserves it purely as a "thank you for the income you brought us even though you were a pain in the ass and we milked it as long as we could"

120 million maybe a lot to a lowly shufu or office drone but for an elite sportsman its a pittance compared to football or pro-baseball.
