Kei Nishikori, left, shakes hands with Sony executive Masao Morita on Wednesday.

TOKYO —

Sony Corp on Wednesday said it has signed a three-year sponsorship contract with Kei Nishikori, 18, who became the youngest Japanese player to win a Davis Cup match when he defeated Mahesh Bhupathi of India last month. Sony did not disclose the amount it is paying to sponsor Nishikori who is currently ranked 99th by the ATP.

At a press conference held at Sony’s showroom in Ginza, Nishikori said, “I’m very happy to have made the contract with Sony which has the ‘No.1 brand’ image. It’s given my confidence a real boost. My goal this year is to be ranked within the top 50 in the world and play in the Grand Slam tournaments.” Nishikori added that he would also like to play in the Olympic Games.

I hope SONY sponsors atheletes of any nationality, not just Japanese, since it sells its stuff and makes money everywhere.

I think Japanese firms which do business overseas should create scholarships and sponsorships for locals rather than trying to help only Japanese do well.

Most US firms do not care about nationality. I was very impressed with their generosity, especially HP Foundation which helped me many times even though I'm Japanese.
