Yet another JT hyped headline. A pitcher doesn't win games based on his strikeout count, but by the number of runs he gives up. Therefore, Tanaka striking out roughly one batter per inning while giving up almost an equal number of hits (at least two of which were for extra bases) and 3 runs in five innings hardly qualifies as a "strong effort." I'm a big Ma-kun supporter and hope he wins every award possible, including a World Series ring, but how about some honest and objective journalism, JT editors.

Since he earned his first pre-season win, we think it can be called a strong effort.

I completely agree with ben4short. Giving up 3 runs is Not a 'strong effort'. I'm sure he (Tanaka) would agree with that. I wish him the best of luck.

I'll wait until he's playing in games that matter and actually starts earning his hefty pay check before I get too excited.

Regardless of the headline, three runs over six innings is good effort that any team would be very happy with.

He struck out six. I agree with headline. I watched Angels game, did not watch this so when he struck out six I read, I agree with headline,

@cracaphat: I did not watch this game but I usually change the channel when one pitcher gives up 3 runs, But Yankees won anyway.

Perspective folks, perspective. Some US sports reporters used phrases such as "struggled a bit" and "was not at his best" in describing this outing. In my opinion, describing it as a "strong effort" is a bit much !
