NEW YORK —
Ai Sugiyama advanced to the women’s singles second round at the U.S. Open on Tuesday after her Slovenian opponent Andreja Klepac retired in the third set because of pain in her right shoulder.
Sugiyama lost the first set 6-4 and won the second 6-3 before Klepac had her serve broken to fall behind 4-2 in the third set and decided to retire at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 33-year-old Japanese advanced past the U.S. Open singles first round for the 14th consecutive year.
