I don't understand why they had to wait until Taiho was already dead. Sure he had foreign blood, but Sadaharu Oh, who was the first person to receive the People's Honor Award, isn't even a Japanese citizen. And Sachio Kinugasa, another baseball player, also had a foreign (African-American) father. The only other sumo wrestler to receive the award, Chiyonofuji, got it back in 1989. Taiho deserved better.

Very deserving of this award. Too bad he couldn't have been presented with it while still alive. RIP, Yokozuna.
