It appears that the matches are still being rigged if you note the performance of the top wrestlers. Sumo is going the route of professional wrestling with gimmicks and staged matches in order to attract more fans. The number of young people who attend matches is dwindling and the old folks who make up the current fans are dying off. Sumo is subsidized by the government and wants to hang on to the teat as long as possible.

Good old Sumo! And yet, some posters on here claim that all of SUMOU's problems are due to foreign wrestlers.

smithin - Sumo's problems are due to foreigners.

By their superior wrestling skills they have created an enormous headache for the locals.

And it could have happened, but I've never heard of a foreign wrestler being bashed over the head with a bat, beer bottle or whatever.

Long over-due for Sumo to emerge.

browny1: My bad. You are absolutely correct.

Is that why foreigners are taking over sumo? Because they don't put up with the 'culture' of hierarchy and abuse? Because they don't put up with 'respecting' bullies? I bet it's connected
