"The concept of adding teams from Japan and Argentina to the tournament was long mooted as a way of developing the game"
Well not only. Sanzar wanted more money this is why they looked at new markets. The Pacific islands next door were never considered for obvious financial reasons. SA, NZ and Oz see Japan and to a lesser extent Argentina as a good way to cash in and grow their brand in the Asian and South American markets. Asking the sunwolves to play some of their home games in Singapore (!) is imo pretty poor.
I actually think the Sunwolves could be the surprise package of the SR season. Their draw isn't too bad, Lions, Cheetahs and Kings have always struggled in SR, the Bulls aren't the team they once were, and even the aussie teams they will be playing aren't world beaters especially away from home. Really hope the wolves get a few southern hemisphere scalps.
