TBS sells Yokohama BayStars to DeNA

TOKYO —

Broadcaster TBS announced Friday that it has reached an agreement to sell its baseball team, the Yokohama BayStars, to cell phone game creator DeNA.

The team will be called the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, pending approval by Nippon Professional Baseball and the owners of the other 11 pro baseball teams.
DeNA, founded in 1999, operates Mobage, a social gaming platform that currently has more than 30 million registered members in Japan. A DeNA spokesman said the company will combine IT and baseball to make the game more enjoyable for fans, TBS reported.

real-time stats, apps for ya ipad or pc, camera footage from different angles, trajectory courses, ball velocity, weather info, twitter feeds, player info, multiple commentary, past game footage, stick/ball/glove brands and purchase on line, gambling odds and a whole list of other things that IT can bring to the game or your living room.

@NetNinja--while it's true that that they had the worst record of all teams this year (an abyssmal 48 wins or something), they were playing under the cloud of rumors about the team getting sold all season. Probably not good for team unity. Reminds me of the uncertainty for the Dodgers getting taken over by MLB this year.

@cwhite--gambling odds? That might be perfect for bored sumo wrestlers, but I don't think anyone in Vegas cares about NPB.
