Valuable to the sport? What about Ota the fencing silver medalist? Who in Japan even knew what fencing was before he won?

Yeah, but you don't hear people saying, "Might wanna add a 'in the U.S there'" when an article like that is released in the States.

Possible, although the moderators have been harping on about how they show stories from all over the world, and not only in the World or Asia sections. In that case it would be best with one.
If it said "Jet Favre [sic] named most valuable person in sport in 2008" then I would expect it to be a view of the world rather than just one country. Of course, the World Series in baseball obviously means that isn't really the case in the US.

Talented young man, but he should have stayed in school and not bent to the pressure of the JPGA and his parents to become pro at such a young age.
