Well, this weekend we have all had to ensure the collective round of "back-slapping" and continuous TV coverage of the letter being opened announcing Tokyo as the ultimate winner - all designed to give the insecure Japanese some level of confidence and validation that their country is indeed "special". I'm sure it will continue this week.
Good for them - and congratulations. But I hope the cost of hosting the Olympics isn't greater than the expected financial benefits........

Hip, Hip, Hoooray, this is just another timely smoke screen to take away the bumbling incompetences of those running the country. This is constructed for the masses so that they, the masses don't look to closely at what the real problems the country faces, and this is not just Japan , just look at the world daily news reports to see this happening in many countries. Politicians are just the puppets of the big corporations, corporations, the one percent run the world without any regard for the 99 percent. The Olympics is just another money making machine for the few. Madrid and Istanbul consider yourselves lucky you lost.

Not sure i would include Japan in Asian "dynamism". also, wasn't that what Beijing got them for?

I agree, but it will continue for the next 7 years. I can understand the amount of hoopla around the 1964 games. 19 years after the devastation of WW2, and the rebuilding of Japan. But I have not heard that the 64 games were part of the catalyst that made Japan an industrial giant in the 70's and 80's.
But good for Japan. i just hope tht the politicans don't blow it.

I guess Madrid lost to Paris (by lobbying?) which wants to host the 2024 games for their 100th anniversary.

I wonder if the J-Gov will get control over those Nationalist and their Black Vans during the lead up to the games. Nothing like a little controversy to disrupt the mood. Maybe the olympics in Japan is a good thing and they will be able to silence these guys.
I wonder will there be a big to do about the visit to Yasikuni shrine in 2020 before the Olympics.
