Why we are yet to see a debate if not criticism on the actual need for this huge investment is beyond me. Aside from the Olympics which the people are not even sure whether they actually want to host or not how else do they expect to have this huge stadium packed on a constant basis when we neither have Barcelona nor Real Madrid? How can we justify this while at the same time the nation's capital should lend a stronger helping hand to the continued sufferings up north? I say put this on hold.

A reallybeautiful fluid piece of architecture that is worthy as a show case to the world if Japan win the Olympic Game.

The new venue will be built on the site of the existing 54,000-seater national stadium

Does this mean the "samurai helmet" is going to be torn down to make space?

It would be more authentic if they emulated the shape of an athletic supporter...

Vituosos, you want a stadium shaped like a sports bra?

Because, given the economy, much like a bike helmet this stadium will need to be able to survive a crash.

Just big enough to fit ISHIHARA'S HEAD.

I have sat in the present national stadium many times ... in snow, in cold rain, in torrid heat ... and despite the various types of weather it is a very nice stadium ... but it is getting old. Undoubtedly a new, modern stadium will have to be built to replace it. So the new design looks rather nice, especially as it has a roof overhead. Just hope they figure out how to handle 80,000 spectators adequately and comfortably.

Tax-payers in Japan pay taxes to both the national and local governments. The taxes to the local governments are supposed to be used locally so they are not usually sent to other areas in Japan. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2206.html The Tokyo Metropolitan area, being the most densely populated area in Japan is supposedly the richest. While the Tohoku area still needs a lot of financial support, the taxes paid to the municipalities and prefectures are usually spent locally, used for their citizens.

I guess donations can be made but wonder whether the local governments can (meaning allowed by law) or are willing to do that.

The present national stadium was built for the Tokyo Olympics and is already physically and morally out of date (I sometimes go there for training but the facilities though well maintained are really old.) Also, it was built before the Hanshin earthquake, which means that it does not conform to the stricter requirements/standards for seismic resistance which were adopted after that earthquake.

Ironic, seeing as how bike-unfriendly Tokyo is.

This goes to show everyone that the Japanese people no longer have good imagination skills when trying to create something new. To come up with an idea to make a national stadium look like a bike helmet. Come on now!!!! Can't the Japanese come up with a better design!!! I guess not!!!!!

Okay... hang on a minute. I have no doubt the stadium would be very modern and have extremely good tech, and the retractable roof would be a nice touch, but "it must match the surroundings" or what? downtown Tokyo? All you need is cement for that. And "all weather"? are they going to have it air-conditioned in the stifling summer humidity?

The structure, designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid

Im curious, apart from the two events mentioned when else will the 80,000 seat venue be used...? Honest curiousity here, the London venue infamously is designed to come apart reducing its size.

Let's see if I got this right, we have a 72,000 seat stadium in Yokohama that is hardly utilized that cost 60 billion and won't pay for itself for about 300 years and we are going to spend another 120 billion to build an 80,000 seater in Tokyo because heaven forbid Tokyo should use a stadium in Yokohama assuming they get the 2020 Olympics. Is that right?

How about an enormous stadium in the shape of Pikachu or Kitty-chan or a mosaiced peenus?
