"Officials aiming to bring the 2016 Summer Olympics to Tokyo fear that Barack Obama’s victory in the U.S. presidential election will have a positive effect on the bid of his hometown of Chicago"
Ha-ha ! Gee, can't Tokyo just simply counter with "Ishihara" ???
elbudamexicano at 07:03 PM JST - 6th November
The USA has had way too many Olympics! The hell with crappy Chicago! If poor Tokyo can not get a second chance this time, let RIO DE JANEIRO BRAZIL have a chance! Brazil deserves a chance at the olympics more than the USA!

People should also consider the security situation. Salt Lake City was like a police state in 2002 due to terrorism fears. Chicago would likely be the same way due to its high criminal and Muslim element. Rio probably can't be well defended from either criminals or foreign terrorists. Japan would probably need the least security and provide the safest venue.

True. And in London, evrything centers around them. And in New York. And in Paris. And Rio Je Janeiro. That's how the world works. Cities and people invariably are concerned about themselves.

I'm all for Chicago hosting the Olympics as long as Chicago or Illinois pays for it completely. My federal tax dollars are about as stretched as can be already.

Sorry Chicago, but I think it would be nice if Rio got a turn. South America has never had the Olympics. Tokyo had 1964.

I have to agree with the general premise here... Obama is super star material and the world would love the opportunity to bask in his glory for a few hot summer months in 2016 !

i have a feeling that tokyo would be a better host than chicago. chicago's great, but, come on, tokyo is the BEST!!!
Quirinus3 at 03:47 AM JST - 8th November
"tokyo is the BEST" hahahah, thanks for the laugh. No chance with their evil mayor in office and their poor atittude was shown worldwide during the World CUp. Tough luck Japan, you aint got a chance, and that's a fact.

quirinus, if you don't like japan that much, then why are you even on this website??? and i assume that you haven't actually been to japan. it's a great country with really nice people.
BlackFlag at 12:32 PM JST - 8th November
I agree with Quirinus and Judochick. he's right about tokyo and you are right about japan

Right, the trains and the suicides could happen everytime a foreigner won a gold medal. I remember during the World Cup, my local tea/nori dealer asked me, "Where are all the hooligans?" Well? How would you have answered?
BlackFlag at 02:01 AM JST - 9th November
the overwhelming majority of arrests made during the world cup were of japanese nationals despite the frenzied hooplah beforehand. the staff manning the rape counselling centres specially set up to handle the invading pillaging raping foreign hordes were hopefully very relieved that they weren't actually needed. I would hope the Olympics would be handled in a much better fashion but also hope that it doesnt get anywhere near Tokyo as long as Shintaro Ishihara draws breath.
Quirinus3 at 08:08 PM JST - 7th December
judochick- Quirinus has been in Japan for a longer time than you, i assure you. I am a realist not a Japanophile, amybe after a while you shall be too. Tokyo does not deserve anything especially after the many cruel and evil remarks of Ishihara.

Theres no way the election of Obama should be a factor in this because he is screwing America only worse, not better then George Bush was. Brazil or Spain should host the olympics.
