"The Tokyo metropolitan government is expected to face a shortfall of around 700 million yen in donations from the private sector for its failed bid to host the 2016 Olympics,...."
What's the big deal? He should just have the Tokyo Shinginko write a check to cover the difference.
**HHMMMMmmm , "but progress in collecting donations was slow due to low public expectations that the Japanese capital would be chosen to host the event." ** sirgamble - if you would think about it clearly. All of us agree it is more than what they are saying or written on paper. Flying the PM there costs about 8 million. Security, hotels for all the VIPS, etc etc & whatever whatever. Nobody will really know the "Price Tag" on this whole deal. Nobody will never know !!!!! When they were in tokyo they probably had staff members to check the tokyoites friendliness and hospitality. They found none and choose Brazil. Next time give it to Osaka or Fukuoka.
The already-crowded mass transit system couldn't have handled the Olympics. Tokyo's failure was a blessing for people who have to live and work in Tokyo.
Just imagine if ishihara won the bid, the losses on the games themselves would be staggering since he could not even manage to be on budget for the bidding process.
I guess getting bribed is easier for Ishihara than making bribes.
recently saw waste at the finest. Tokyo Olympic bid had put a booth here in Singapore. Travel to Japan. (The event had, China, Taiwan, Korea, America, Russia, and Japan.) I didn't see anyone at the Japan booth for nearly 1 hour. I was having coffee near and thought it was strange they would have 6 Japanese at a booth with no one visiting or talking. This is where the 8 million went. No one was paying attention.
I think the taxpayers should refuse to pay any taxes unless Ishihara and his political cronies pay for this out of their own pocket. By himself Ishihara could pay off this debt within 5 years-his trashy, rightwing books make him that much or more every year.
I'd like to see a cost breakdown of the Y300,000,000 for a booth at a promotional event.
Let's suppose the booth and exhibition space cost Y1,000,000, another Y1,000,000 for brochures and pamphlets, Y2,000,000 to fly a few staff over and pay for hotel expenses. That leaves Y296,000,000 unaccounted for. What on earth did they spend it on? If Ishihara and his mates can't come up with a clear explanation I will have to assume that the money has been stolen.
Ishihara is not to blame for this... the 'child eating forests' are! Just ask him.
I just hope that when residential taxes have to cover the shortfall and get jacked up next year, someone reminds the people why. Knowing Japan's unbelievable capacity for forgetting/forgiving political scandals and reelecting, well, they'll probably have some excuse to THANK Ishihara for it by year's end.
When it's all said and done, it speaks volumes about the Japanese people that Shintaro Ishihara has been Tokyo governor for so many years now.
He keeps getting reelected so one can only assume that a majority of the Tokyo electorate agree with him and aren't offended by his offensive and racist/sexist comments. Sad, really. We can't have a smart, forward-thinking, internationally-minded man or woman under 50 years old speaking for Tokyo, right?
a booth at a promotional event in Switzerland in June, which had not been scheduled at first, costing Tokyo about 300 million yen.
Could someone let the Tokyo government know that I could provide a booth for just 1 Million JPY and pocket the difference. Oh wait, someone already beat me to the punch.

It's only 8 million bucks... not exactly huge when you consider how big the budget is... no need to panic.

I wonder who Gov. Ishihara will blame for this?
