I hear the crime rate went down quite a bit though recently. Seems a lot of those Chicago crooks have left town for some newer fancier digs in Washington D.C.

Well personally I think the government should be using this money to refund all the retirement accounts they "misplaced - aka: stole". Of course the droned and brainwashed public here will be cheering this on que from the elite. Just as they have been programmed to do.

Please Nooo !!! Rio or Chicago !!!! The way they treat foreigners in japan train. Instead of " women only " trains they would probably make foreigner only trains. Tokyo is not really TOURIST FRIENDLY YET. It's getting there. Tokyoites are not friendly.

Absolutely!

Oh God ! PLEASE not Tokyo...for the sake of sports fans and tourists alike.Japan is a shocker for hosting big sports events.Poor infrastructure and lack of experience dealing with the influx of people make it a nightmare.

Well, its 8 years away, that said, I don't see it happening either. I think Rio or Chicago are much more likely. Having been in Beijing last year, I think the committee is more likely to send it to South America this time around.

could you imagine the subways being more packed than they already are? how in the he#l could they host the para-olympics with several subway stations not having elevators, one wheelchair going up the side of the stairs on a special machine would take days to get a group up the stairs!
kanashibari at 08:34 PM JST - 27th January
Actually, this story is rather interesting because it indicates that Japan is willing to do anything to succeed in getting the games. Just like the Nagano Winter Olympics where Japan (at the top of the bubble economy) said it would basically pay for everything.
good point but the BUBBLE was way way over by 1998!

"Tokyoites are not friendly."
Well, the south side and the near west side of Chicago ain't exactly the friendliest of places either. The antiquated public transportation system, while cheap, sucks. You would also really need to be mindful of which station you passed on the Red Line or the Green Line.

Tokyo needs to give up.They will definitely lose. This whole bid is just a huge waste of time and money to soothe Shintaros ego.

I am looking forward to it. Especially because we all know in their classically penny-wise pound-foolish way the Japanese will build all kinds of buildings and facilities to show off their latest green technology to the world (Ishihara has hinted environmentalism would be the theme of the proposed Tokyo Olympics), bragging about how energy efficient those structures are without mentioning they are superfluous and thus waste energy no matter how efficient they are. Of course half a million people taking an otherwise unnecessary trip to a country only accessible by air is an eco-bonanza. Should be fun.

DO not supporting opinion is also important. We live in a democratic society. But, There is no correct answer.
SumoBob at 02:25 PM JST - 30th January
Never mind the fact that Tokyo (ie.Japan) doesn't deserve the Olympics for several reasons, but the real reason to deny this bid would be the insane amount of money that would be spent, particularly on security matters (like protecting Japan from the masses of "foreigners" invading the country. If last year's 3-day G8 summit was any indication (60 billion yen spent, mostly on security, in contrast with the 2005 G8 summit in the UK where costs came in at 4 billion yen) the taxpayers in Japan may be fitting the bill for decades to come.

not since 1984 has hosting the olympics not cost the tax payer so why would anywhere want them? Who cares about table tennis and gymnastics anyway. The olympics are so much past their use by date.
