This won't get the airplay here that soccer got (because Japan lost). But having teams in two major women's championships is great for both sides.

agreed, that is awesome. seems like second place is not really praised in japan.

This won't get airtime simply because it's a minor sport (softball; hence it being omitted from the next Olympic games), and the World Cup of softball is not as prestigious anyway, as the Olympics. If it were soccer, they would show it, even if Japan would lose, since if you show a game live, you can never know the outcome until you show it, right? In any case, softball is like cricket and badminton; minor sports that don't get much airtime anyway.

I dunno - cricket gets plenty of airtime in India and Australia and the nations that play it (only 8 or 9). Never will in Japan though - it isn't a "minor" sport here - it doesn't even exist! I would have thought there would have been coverage of Japan in the softball world cup though - they were pushing hard to keep it in the olympics, right?

True, and softball is popular in Japan, but I've never seen any coverage of a "World Cup" of softball. The only thing that has ever been covered was the Olympics. The fact is that the "World Cup of softball" has never been shown, and will probably never, and it has nothing to do whether Japan wins or not. There's just not much interest in it as there is when it's played in the Olympics. Thus, softball's push to have it in the Olympics. I guess the Olympics carries more prestige and weight, than a tournament that takes its name after a more popular sport: soccer.

both cricket and netball have much more global support than softball.
