Blue Tiger - Playing on your opponent's home turf is an advantage, not a disadvantage. When you have the fans rooting for your opponents, it gives you added incentive to beat your opponents in front of their fans! Ha ha ha!

What a piece of crap team.

Japan(women's) is ranked 8th in the world that's not a bad number considering how many countries play volleyball, and they beat Italy (ranked #2).

Republic of Texas, Japan are ranked 8th in the world because since Athens Olympic they have not play any meaningful away from home, The world championship, the world cup, qualifiers, and every FIVB official match were hosted by Japan.

Crucifier - The Japanese women are ranked 8th in the oworld because they're better than every other team in the world except for 7 teams.

I watched a special about the Japanese women's volleyball team tonight. They said the Japanese attackers are Takesh'ta plus Takashima (?) are 170 cm. So Japanese women cannot compete with the taller gaijin. Their tactics is to make a speedy attack. The attack of the Japanese team is done for 0.83 seconds. The time of the USA's attack is about 1.3 sec. So Japanese think their speed is their advantage.

lol Takesh'ta's name cannot be spelled correctly here and my message was rejected

That's all well and good, I just hope they can bribe the relevant construction officials in China to build an 8-stage medal podium.

Spoken like a true member of society who's never played an organized sport above biddy-ball or little league. With all due respect, Sarge, playing on your oppoenents' home territory does nothing of the kind. What it does is give the home team an edge, which is why home-field advantage is called "home field advantage" in the first place. Otherwise, why do the pros put so much emphasis on gaining it for the play-offs?

If Japan's Womens V-ball team really is #8 in the world, why did they have to play all of their 2007-08 season and Olympic Qualifyng matches at home? Sarge, you've used Japan's second match against Italy, and their allegedly good showing (albeit defeat, so one really can't boast anything about a loss) against Brazil as evidence of them being such a great team: let's see what happens if and/or when the J-Women's V-bal team plays in Rome or in Rio de Janeiro, and we'll see what the score sheet looks like. I daresay that on Brazil's home court, Japan would get smokled, and on Italy's home turf, would likely have their 3-game sweep reversed in Italy's favor....

I watched, on TV, the Japan vs The Dominican Republic game in Macau. DR is ranked #14 and they beat Japan (26-24,25-13,25-18). The Japan team does not seem to be able to win off-shore. Maybe they get nervous when they are out of the country or they really need the home court advantage to play well.

  • Sarge at 06:21 AM JST - 15th July

Tiger - Hey, if the Italians wanted to have the "home field advantage" so bad, they could put up the money and insist on hosting a tournament.

  • Sarge at 06:38 AM JST - 15th July

TokyoGas - You must have missed last year's Asian Championships in Thailand which Japan won.

  • Blue_Tiger at 06:40 AM JST - 15th July

sarge - Who says the Italians didn't try? And if Japan is allegedly that good, why did they pony up all the money to have all of their qualifying games at home? What -- if Japan really is soooooo good -- does the J-Women's V-Ball team have to fear from going to another country to play their FIVB games?

  • PrinceskaNo1 at 10:37 AM JST - 15th July

The big teams prepare for the Olympics. All the teams played at half their strength in Japan because they do not want to reveal their secrets and strategy for the olympics. Italy lost to Japan now, but they might win an Olympic medal while Japan has no chance at all.

PrinceskaNo1 - "All the teams played at half their strength in Japan"

Including the Japanese, right? So why would they have "no chance at all" in the Olympics?

  • PrinceskaNo1 at 01:39 PM JST - 15th July

Sarge, I think they have no chance because even at home, they could not do much...But it is my opinion, maybe they might prove me wrong.
