U.S. to bid for 2018 and 2022 World Cups

The United States plans to submit simultaneous bids for the right to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022.

The U.S. Soccer Federation said on Thursday that president Sunil Gulati will announce on Monday the intention to bid for the tournament in both years. The U.S. staged the World Cup in 1994, the highest-attended World Cup ever.

Monday is the deadline for submissions to FIFA, and four bids are expected from Europe: England, Spain/Portugal, Netherlands/Belgium/Luxembourg and Russia.

In Asia, Indonesia announced its candidacy on Wednesday, joining Australia and Qatar. China and Japan were expected to follow in the coming days.

FIFA intends to decide on the 2018 and 2022 sites in December 2010.

Next year’s World Cup is in South Africa and the 2014 tournament is scheduled for Brazil.

Is there no end to the long list of misguided Brits flooding this forum ? FYI Alf the last time the USA played an international friendly (February 7th 2008), of any importance, in the USA attendance was over 70,000 ! Boleyn Ground at Upton Park holds just over 35,000 !

to even imply that Upton Park is a model stadium representative of what Engalnd has to offer is delusional.

What Engalnd has to offer is Wembley (90,000 seated), Old Trafford (76,000 seated), Emirates (60,000 seated), St James Park (53,000 seated), Anfiled (46,000 seated and hopeful that Stanley Park will be up and running for 60k seated by then), Villa Park (43,000 seated and hopefully up to 51,000 after expansion).

There are currently around 10 to 12 places bigger than Upton Park, and if London needed to host it would be consider Emirates adn Stamford bridge before they even look at that crappy Claret and Blue ground!

Get real guys ! American Universities have larger stadiums than what you "boast" here. Both Michigan and Penn State have capacities well over 107,000 ! The Rose Bowl in sunny California is also a beautiful venue with more than 95,000 seats ! Take yer pick, Britain in the summer... or the beaches of lovely SoCal ! Hah... no brainer !

magpie: We is going to upgrade our stadium mate. It will make Emirates look like an old toilet.

We deserve the world cup, and Upton Park with its brilliant location and friendly locals is the most ideal place to hold the big matches, all the locals in me pub agree.

America don't have afootball culture, we invented the game and would be the most welcoming hosts and foreign supporters can know they will have a safe visit without guns everywhere like some places.

I'd say it's a bit too soon for USA to host it again, though Mexico did do it after a gap of 16 years, I believe. But why on earth is Japan thinking of bidding after hosting it in 2002? Aren't they scared of the hooligans?

Huh ? This isn't the same America that knocked England out of the first world cup tourney and finished third way back in 1930 is it ? Not the same Americans that has more Olympic medals from the soccer tournement than England. Not the same nation that has seen its womens team win not one but two World cups ! Not to mention three Golds at the Olympics. Hmm, seems to me the US not only has solid "football" culture, but a more succesful program than the highly debatable "inventors".

Yes it is the US that tried to change football from two 45 minute halves to a game of quarters. Stick to your crappy pigskin version of football played with hands.

The only reason america has won so many olympic football (not soccer for twats like americans) is that the likes of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are good enough to have their own associations and will not play (until 2012) under a unified Great Britain and Northern Ireland team.

Let's just say, the US soccer stops at little kids and soccer mums (not moms - learn to spell mate).

Football is coming home to Engalnd! and more importantly to St James Park!
