Plenty of American Baseball coaches have tried their hand managing Japanese teams.... it must have been a shock to the Japanese players when they were not forced to run 100 laps before and after practice.

I thought 'no pain, no gain' is a universally understood concept. Apparently not.

So what were the expectations for a team of this ability?

It seems rather clear here that, with in the seeming unanimous rejection of physically demanding training to help Vietnamese players experience success in a physically demanding sport, soccer just may not be Vietnam's particular cup o' sporting tea.

I'm with the Vietnamese. Professional spectator sports is too much.

So he was fired for poor performance, not because of his 'tough' style. The headline is inaccurate.

I think Vietnam losing 8-1 to Man City is a pretty respectable result

No surprise, Japanese coaches and bosses can be mean like dictators, slapping and shouting at players/employees. They need to show a bit of kindness - look at the best sports team in history the All Blacks, there coaches are always best friends with the players.

As a soccer coach, I'd say the players were unsuccessful, or at the very least, not committed enough to win.

Don't know enough about this case, however in general I think "coaching" in Japan is all to often a lot like bullying & abuse.
I played a lot of sports etc as a kid but I have a feeling I would have HATED sports in Japan & likely opted out of some if not all the things I did when young.
Now at pro & high levels you expect to have to train hard, but Japan often goes too far & we occasionally see people(including lots of kids) collapsing & even dying, hell some even think your weak if you want water, ........
Japan style coaches aren't my cup of tea!!!
