it's perhaps a little something called "playing through pain" combined with another little something called "representing your country". two things that that sissy Chipper Jones knows nothing about. what was it that sent him to the bench again? a hangnail? wuss!!!

Nah... an ulcer is an ulcer, and not a pretty thing. As much as I hate the guy, I feel a bit bad for him, and I agree it's better they found this early.
This is rock-solid proof that you cannot try to work your tail off in both the WBC and MLB when they are so close together. That's definitely the end of Ichiro in any more of such tournaments, and may be the end of his MLB career, too. Was it worth it?
Anyway, as I've said three times at least, this could also spell the end of most MLB players joining any future WBC, and could jeopardize the credibility of it, as the argument between people who supported the American and Japan teams, and how the former was not taking on any important players. It seems in light of what happened to Ichiro and even Johjima being a bit behind, as opposed to players who did not take part in the WBC doing amazingly so far in the MBL season, the decision to not allow the best MLB players to join the WBC was/is a wise one.
Take care, Ichiro!

"stress-related"
If only I could experience Ichiro's stress...

His other stresses, sure. An ulcer-related stress, no thanks!

Didn't know they started playing regular season baseball already with so many doing "amazingly" so far...
Johjima is a catcher, so his job as far as adjusting to pitchers is a little more complicated than an outfielder. Add to the mix a new coach in Seattle, and yes, it has been complicated so far this spring. However, had they been with their teams, they would have been playing 9 inning games anyway; the only difference is that if anyone had gotten injured, coaches would have nobody to blame but themselves.
By the way, it is probably the last WBC of Ichiro's career because of his age. I'm sure he'll get over the ulcer soon.

when will people join the 21st century and understand that ulcers are not caused by stress?
onewrld, it might have something to do with showing loyalty to the team that is paying you millions to play in the MLB and not the WBC. frankly, the WBC is not worth getting injured over if you are a MLB player.

I LOVE biology, in particular psychobiology (perception and sensation), but also love reading up on diseases and what not.
You're wrong, in part... One of the direct causes of some peptic ulcers is destruction of the gastric or intestinal stomach lining by acid, which normally splashes up from the people who develop them. Some gastric ulcers and those formed in the duodenum can also be formed by weakening or injury of the stomach lining by acid secretions, and guess what the causes of such secretions/hydrochloric acid splashing are? psychological stress and genetic predisposition. Other GENERAL and common causes of ulcers, if memory serves, are taking a lot of anti-inflammatory drugs (namely aspirin), smoking, and probably alcohol abuse and a lot of vomiting (not sure about the latter, but know at the very least they can make ulcers worse). BUT, for those posters who say ulcers are caused by bacteria, you're not wrong, either. They are. And more and more researches believe that MOST ulcers are caused by this. I forget the exact name, but there's a common bacterial infection which can cause especially peptic ulcers.
As for Ichiro, you're right... I think this would have been his last stint anyway, and I think the ulcer will get better as well.

How foolish the people here mocking Ichiro must feel.

What are you on about? The season hasn't started yet. And Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Miguel Cabrera, I would say are four of the top five players in the MLB. The only one missing there was Albert Pujols. So there was no concerted effort to not allow the best MLB players to join the WBC. A lot of them did. Pitching was a different story, for sure, I would say the majority of the top pitchers weren't there, but position players were very well represented at this tournament.
