Can somebody please explain why companies in Japan, use this punitive reduction in salary as a way of so called punishment. Is it culture based,an insult, akin to having one's hand slapped ??. Because I don't think the 10 or 20 % would be noticed for three months by these executives.

They'll be taking home a good million yen each month, even with this ritualistic pay cut. A waste of time. Even the approbation of public shame is meaningless now.

Giving a discount to all customers would mean more, the outages affect customers but their salary reductions do nothing for customers, this is pure theatre.

I think it is a form of punishment so they can not repeat the mistake again.. but it does not happen in all countries and mostly targets senior positions.

imagine SB executives had to take a pay cut for their shoddy network, pretty soon they would be paying to work :)

I just spent a few days in Hakuba, up there SB network is shocking, but not as bad as Shonan !

[salary]...reduced by 20% for three months while the other executives will take a 10% trim over the same period

Hey, don't go twisting your arms too hard now. Remember, the world is a stage, and we're all just actors.

So you guys think they should get paid like some of the American companies like GM ? Like the former GM CEO Wagner who was making mroe than $50M when the company was losing billions of dollars every year ?

At least they are taking responsibility unlike executives in most other countries.

Why did they try to deflect blame onto the numbers of users caught off guard by the JR stoppage? Within hours of the announcement about the cause being the JR stoppage, posters on this site exposed their tissue of lies. Sort your PR Dept out Docomo, they are not fit for purpose.

I agree with Hide Suzuki, look at the UK's RBS nearly 1million GBP payout amid falling share prices... at least the Japanese are doing something about it.

Docomo is trying to grab a bigger slice of Japan’s expanding smartphone market, but faces stiff competition from rivals Softbank and KDDI, both of which offer Apple’s hugely popular iPhone, which it does not.

I just love how some journalists focus attention on small issues like these.

Yes, Docomo does not have iPhone, but does offer the Galaxy tab, BlackBerry and some other brands and models which are exclusively theirs.

So 6 high executives of Docomo including the president will have a 3-month cut from their taxes ... sorry, salaries.

While this may be a good thing (considering Docomo seems quite responsible enough to admit their misgivings), the 10-20% cut for the top execs would in no way benefit the 2.52 million users affected by the 3-hour service interruption.

I could just imagine the frustration felt by those affected, specially people who rely on the mobile phones to communicate with their colleagues or clients even.
