The biggest step for airliners are to abolish short hops which consumes more fuel due to take-off and landings by pushing High Speed Rail into the transportation mix. They may lose some customers but will improve overall profit due to less cost in fuel and maintenance associated with short distance travel.

SamuraiBlue: Agree. I think the market should decide but investing in a rail infrastructure costs a lot of money. Governments are broke for any help and lobbies would be against it because pork barrels are flying too.

There must be a way for airlines to squeeze a few more paying passengers into economy class... how about moving the rows of seats a few centimeters closer? Passengers over 170 cm tall can just bring their knees up to their chests - problem solved!

Reducing weight helps tremendously in fuel efficiency. There are two things that can be done. The Stewards and Stewardesses should be required to weigh less than they do now. Plus people in the isle seats would be able to get some rest rather than being banged into on both sides of the isles at the same time. Also, BMI could be used for customers and be taxed extra accordingly.

Major Japanese manufacturers had already signed up with Airbus Engines to provide proprietary technology in two fields; 1. ceramic engine parts for fuel to burn hotter to provide larger thrust and 2. carbon composites for engine turbine fins.
