Apple’s iOS 5 to adopt earthquake early warning function
Technology ( 12 )
TOKYO —
Apple’s iOS5, which will be released this fall, will have over 200 functions such as iMessage and updated alert functions. Users in Japan will be also able to download for free an “earthquake early warning” function. It will be linked to the government’s early-detection service, which can provide a few seconds advance warning prior to an earthquake hitting.
The new notification can be activated or deactivated from within the Notifications pane of an iPhone’s settings. If it is left on, the battery will require charging more often.

So they're adopting what keitais (or at least AU, am pretty sure others too) have had for years? This isn't reinventing the wheel, people, despite what Apple may tell you.
My no-frills AU phone was going off like crazy before the last one down in Okinawa.

I already have the Yurekuru app which is the same thing. Gets a bit annoying but educates one as to just how many quakes there are off Ibaragi and Fukushima these days.
A better app is the very new Geiger Camera app. 85 yen and it uses the iphone cmos sensor to work as a geiger counter ( you must cover the camera lens)
May be good for those of you in Kanto!

iOS is the operating system... it is free... it does not cost to upgrade (as long as you have a device that supports it).

gogogo: wait for them to charge you 500yen (more or less) for each update in a near future.

They may do that now that the guy who made jailbreak me works for Apple.seroiusly though they will be getting the alerts from the same place as yurekuru and most ppl will disable it anyway. It gives you about enough time to bend over and kiss the chocolate starfish goodbye. You would need either a safe zone to commando roll to, or the fast twitch muscles of Usain Bolt. 'you got m..ashed'

TumbleDry: They charge you for upgrades on the ipod touch not the iphone.

I'm downloading it so when I'm next in Tokyo, it will give me that few precious seconds more.

m6bob....go down in the Hanzomon and tell us those few seconds will matter. Deepest subway on the planet. Earthquakes will occur above it.

Funny to see the usual thumbs down brigade so active when I try to offer some useful tool. My Soeks geiger counter cost me 40,000 yen. This one costs a dollar. For people who have neither the means nor the method to buy a geiger counter this may be a useful tool.
Oh.. And it works pretty well by the way if you let it sit for 30 mins or so.. The results were very close to those of my Soeks.
Who woulda thunk it?
