Steven Jobs was a truly great American. Decades from now, probably centuries really, when Americans look upon the time from second half of the 20th century to the early years of the 21st, it will be realized that it was not politicians like Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama who labored most to deliver on the promise of your right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness but geniuses like Steve Jobs; he stands in relation to his times as the unjustly maligned "robber barons" do to theirs.

Awful news. Everyone knew he was doomed when he resigned - the recent photos of him he looked like a walking skeleton. What a genius he will go down as - transforming a run of the mill brand into the coollest brand in the world. Will Apple ever be the same? Probably not. RIP Steve Jobs.

You could tell in the keynote speech yesterday the presenters weren't that happy, not smiling that much, and saying the iPhone4s was "amazing" but without any real stress in their voices. I thought it was because they thought people would be disappointed that they didn't release an iPhone5, but little did I know the real reason...

Iphone 4S debut October 5th, 2011 Steve Jobs dies October 6th, 2011 Iphone 4S not what customers expected. Apple stock drops. Samsung sues Apple (Another article today).

This is shocking news! Waking up today to read this, My Jobs was truly a brilliant and unmatched character!

He has improved the the lives of millions/billions of people around the world when it comes to entertainment and communications, and bringing a whole new generation of technology to this world.

Although I was not really an Apple Fan, I always admired Mr Jobs for his amazing character and his dedication to his company and product, People like Mr Jobs are a very rare breed.

He took Apple from next to bankruptcy to becoming the most valuable tech company surpassing Microsoft. What an achievement!

Mr Jobs you will be truly missed by many many people around the world! RIP Sir

RIP! Indeed a great man that did a great contribution to mankind... BUT... it is kinda suspicious that no official statement from hospitals or other media sources.... interestingly, Apple first did his death announcement the day after when new iPhone 4S was unveiled... which made most of us Apple users a bit disappointed... anyway, could it be that Jobs passed away before the 4th and they were hiding this from the public in order to protect the stock prices of the new released product? That is something we should think about... if that be true... disappointing feeling not only for the new iPhone but the moral of Apple in its entirety...

Many Americans and Europeans have lost many jobs since 2008. Today the smartest and coolest JOBS has gone. He will never come back. The reality is many jobs have lost before will never come back too. This world need more JOBS like him. Not a dirty, repetitive, back breaking and dumb jobs. The definition of Jobs mean cool, slim and attractive design and innovation. Such as Imac and Ipad. Certainly an innovator, absolutely focused in self-belief and determined. A one of a kind, but for a Buddhist he didn't focus on the environment or touch on philanthropy.

Heard the news on the way to work this morning about 8:30 in my car. I knew saw some pictures of him just shortly after he stepped down as CEO that a good friend of mine took and he looked so emaciated and just so close to death, you could clearly see that just by looking at the photos, he wasn't going to make it to the end of this year and he didn't. He was a great man, an innovator, a visionary, there will NEVER be anyone like him again, truly one of a kind and whether some of us want to admit or not, he single-handedly changed the world by giving us products that one could only think of or something that you might see in a sci fi movie. He gave us products that we thought we don't need and now can't put them down. He was an originator a leader and NEVER a follower and I believe we as citizens of this planet owe him a great due of a deep profound gratitude and Thanks.

You will always be remembered, respected, loved and admired from your friends and families to even your fiercest rivals. They can duplicate, but they aren't great!

There was an article on JT about the movie "The Death of a Japanese Salesman" about a retired salaryman wanting to do his "bucket list" before he died (things like vote for another party other than LDP, tell his wife that he loved her).

Just curious and would love to hear from the posters; looking at Jobs and this guy do you think Jobs probably had his list of things that he wanted to do, or more importantly, he made a lot of money, do you think he really enjoyed it? Unlike the character the movie has, he seems to have regretted that he didn't do as much with his life and he missed out.

Any thoughts on this?

A sad day indeed. My condolences to his family and friends. Whether you like Apple or not,, he had such an impact on so many people's lives, and so many industries, besides the computer industry. Music, movies, TV, and designs that influenced so many. I remember when the first iMacs came out, they were see-through in a multitude of colors. Suddenly all kinds of see-through multi-color products came out. I think I still have some extension cords from that time. A visionary, an innovator, someone who truly "thought different" and brought about a world of change. Thank you Mr. Jobs, your legacy will live on forever.

Typing this on a macbook with an iPhone plugged into it and being amazed at how one man can have such an impact on the world. There's so much you can learn from his life and his experiences both positive and negative and I'll be reading up and watching some of his speeches in the hope a little rubs off. I'm old enough to remember when a few quirky people would rave about what they could do on their mac, and most people didn't know what one was! Now look at Apple's place in the world. He just kept coming out with amazing stuff. Thanks a lot Mr Jobs. You made my life a lot easier and a lot more interesting.

@ The758 - indeed, all the kids at school were talking about it & the teachers were quite dewey eyed. I work with 10 year olds & even they were over-awed & saddened - one girl said "Oh, that's only my dad's age". A couple of our MacBooks were acting up & the kids were patting them and saying "We know you're sad, we know you lost your daddy" - very sad day all round.

I watched a TV anchorman saying that Jobs is admired by people he never met because he was the face of the technologies that made our lives easier. He, for instance, was visionary when he made the touchscreen technology available to the masses, at a time that a few geeks could understand and use it in laboratories. The iPhone was crucial to make him popular: all of a sudden the everyday work became easier for those who use one. And, of course, the elegant design of an iPod or iPhone was perhaps the only truly elegant item a person would have. Jobs made efficiency and beauty available to the masses, that's why he is so popular.

I heard that and I agree 100%. RIP Steve.

Sorry, but touchscreen like many other tech been out for ages before Apple used it.

I recall seeing those at shows oh-some 25+yrs ago, what truly made touchscreens available was it being used for ATM's, etc years after it was available. We are still talking CGA/Hercules Monitors here.

Don't get me wrong I respect the man but much of the tech taht Apple used was in use way before their products. Jobs was a great man and he also relied on many other great man that had skills he didn't have, ditto for Edison, etc, etc.

Watch "Pirates of Silicon Valley" and read the book it is based on.

Just said to see that Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne, etc seem to have been erased from history by many modern apple fans.

Unless you think Jobs did it all single-handed research & development, etc. Reality check Apple employas thousands of great and skilled people.

And that includes the times he was top-management and no longer involved with the nitty-gritty of R&D.

The media is raving about how much he contributed to to society, but rally? I don´t use any of his phones, pads, pods and pids, don´t need them, and experience them mainly as a nuisance when all the zombies around me are plugged in and moronically fiddling all day on their little screens. Bah.

Nothing against the man personally, but the cult around the little China-made plastic gimmics that he flooded the world it is ridiculous.
