It's still there as a fully featured version under the Safari browser, not a big deal. The minimal included version was pretty poor anyway....

meh I don't like youtube anyways. Lately 90% of the videos is fake. "please watch the video on my website" wtf. plus it takes 10 years to load and watch on the iphone. good riddance.

What this article ignores is the fact that out of no where some small IT start up could shake things up big time. So don't bet this is just about AAPL and GOOG.

Only as long as google doesn't get pissed off. They have the ability to lock out iphones and make them use the app (not built in) instead, or force them to watch ads all the time. They have no need to service HTML5 versions, their flash version works fine on android phones.

    Apple is the new Microsoft

Even Microsoft doesn't do that stuff. Well, they are getting rid of DVD playback from windows 8, but that's a legal issue from mpeg group being as evil as they are and patents broken as they are.

I have Sony Experia Arc S anyway.

Honestly speaking, I find it a lot cooler than iPhone. Its menu has a lot more useful programs than iPhone and the screen and the camera are SUPERB, just like a normal camera. I'm a fan of Sony through and through, having PSP, Sony Cybershot and a Vaio laptop. But of course there are some pros and cons like there always are.

The iOS version of YouTube kinda sucks anyway.

The [evil] Apple corporation didn't want a decent application in the first place.

I have a jailbroken iPad with ProTube purchased and installed. It is a much better YouTube experience, but you have to cut the Apple chain.

Oh and (Sorry for another comment) Android version 4 (At least on my Sony Xperia) has a very nice version of Youtube application. I use it all the time. I've seen the iPhone version of it, and it's kinda different.

But the app, which was actually built by Apple using YouTube’s standards, did not appear to be as full-featured as YouTube’s own website: the YouTube app does not appear to feature any advertising, and the catalog of available music videos lacks many of the titles found on the website.

Yeah, I can't even find some of my own videos! Stupid crippled app.

More worrisome, said Josey, is what the move could mean for Google’s deal with Apple to be the default search engine on the iPhone.

Yeah, like what else Apple gonna use? Bing? No, that's Microsoft, which has its own phones and tablets. Yahoo? Yahoo uses the Bing Engine, so no too. Ask.com? Apple would be really scraping the barrel.

Apple doesn't have its own search engine, like it doesn't have its own video repository site. So what's the use of excluding them when there's nothing else to replace them!

As long as we can keep using Grindr, I don't care. The iPhone YouTube is majorly crappy anyway.

I hope Apple come up with a new video service. Youtube is cloggy, full of ads, and the filters are really bad. An Apple e-mail service would be great too. I use Gmail now, better than Hotmail, but it's also a mess, full of spams I have deleted, but Gmail keep accepting them.

That arrogant fool was the one who made the enemies. Did you forget the fact he said he wanted to crush google for making android?

We wouldn't be against that. A few issues though:

1.) Are they gonna use flash?

2.) We're starting to move some videos off Youtube to other sites since Youtube seems to becoming more restrictive. We figure Apple would be even more restrictive since Apple likes to control things tightly. Video repository users tend to prefer the laissez-faire attitude instead.

@koiwaicoffee Apple was built entirely on being entirely proprietary, which is great for their quality control, but has zero customizability, and heaven forbid it does break, you're screwed because now you have to send it back to Apple and still pay as much for repairs as it would to buy a brand new product from a different company. Most of their third party software until fairly recently was photo and video editing programs. It wasn't until about 10 years ago when they were backed against a wall that they started opening their systems and allowing full third-party interfacing, and then the i mobile marketing revolution. Apple has never played nice, and they still don't if they see a way to kill competition and take their money.

@lostrune2 Flash is DOA and will be irrelevant in two years. HTML5 finally launched this year, which has multimedia such as video native to the code, meaning we no longer need plugins like Flash.

Yet flash use in web pages has increased significantly. HTML5 is a PITA scripting language, especially for non-recorded video. It's not even all that portable yet. We will be certain to see more HTML5 eventually, but flash won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Neither will youtube for that matter.

Hey as long as we could upload our videos easily to the repository site and watch them everywhere in all devices, that's fine.

Knowing Apple, and how even developers like Google are unable to get apps passed, you would have to sign a contract, pay $99 a year, and then have your videos censored or deleted at will without warning or reason.

@Simp: Apple has had many enemies for many years. I used to love Apple, then I graduated University and learned what they were really doing. All this time, they've been setting up a stockade for systems and apps. When you purchase an Apple product, you enter the stockade. If there is something you want outside the stockade, you have to request that the gates be opened. They may say no or they might say yes. To many, this is part of the Apple experience and a real pleasure. It definitely does simplify their computing choices.

The youtube app created no income for Youtube as it was ad-free.

So, who do you think wanted the youtube app removed? Apple, or Youtube? Expect to see a new official youtube app that you can install with one click.

For those moaning that Apple is taking away choices, well, I think you are wrong here. There will be more ways to look at youtube, just use the browser for example, which will not be a problem now that most of youtube will be HTML5....

Expect to see a new official youtube app that you can install with one click.

But due to "technical limitations in iOS", you can't have a youtube link automatically bring up the app, as is done in Android. Also wastes more bandwidth than the app.
