i was surprised to read this. Now if it read "China drives growth in patent THEFT worldwide" i wouldn't have been so surprised. Guess it shows a bit of prejudice on my part.....

No doubt China's record on intellectual property is very dodgy but they are more than capable of innovation. They are very quick to tell you that many world-changing inventions originated in China ( they also claim some which didn't) and their intellectual high-flyers are comparable with anybody's. I know many are unable to say anything remotely positive about Chinese people but I've spent over a decade working with Chinese industry and as much as some here hate to hear it, they are not simply rip-off artists.

Too many doubters; they said the same of Japan in the 70's and 80's that they stole ideas from the West. China is the new 80's Japan.

The problem is not how many patent applications China put forth since world needs innovations which drive economic growth. The issue is that why Japan loses its used-to-be leading position and is incompetent to compete in the global marketplace as well as talent pool

The inconvenient truth is that Japanese college graduates are lack of many essential qualities that allow them to take the challenges and make it to the top. In addition, Japan’s prevailing corporate culture which encourages salary-men and seniority mentality does not help either.

Japan is increasingly becoming the distant third economy, few patent applications from Japan may serve as a canary in a coal mine for Japan’s forthcoming.

agree with igloo. they said japan ripped off the west, even killed vincent chin for it (a chinese american mistaken for japanese which shows how stupid this intraasian bickering is), said the same things about korean and taiwanese when they emerged in the 90s and 00s, but now what appliances do we have in our house? I have a taiwanese tv, a korean ac, still a japanese car though koreans are gaining percentages in the us. nothing I loathe more than blind nationalism.

-Well, if that were the case, then shouldn't WIPO reject it? I'm pretty sure they've rejected many, but the recent 1/3 applications were accepted.

I agree Ting Zhao, China should not be jealous of developed countries and instead should help out their farmers.

The number of patent applications filed around the world does not mean anything! It is the number of patent applications for which a patent is actually granted that makes a difference. How many of China's patent applications are actually granted?

How many of the millions of poor in China benefit by these patents?

Chinese don't respect copyrights; they ain't gonna respect patents. Chinese entities could file as many patent applications they want, but their own people will undermine them anyways.
