TOKYO —
The number of used household personal computers collected by PC makers in fiscal 2007 fell 1.1% from the previous year to 307,361 units, the PC 3 R Promotion Center said Wednesday.
The decrease reflects a slump in domestic PC sales in the second half of fiscal 2006, the center said. Since recycling of used household PCs started in October 2003, the total number of collected used household PCs has reached 1,216,052 units.

If you have the 'recycle' vans coming around your area, you could hand it to them. Their loudspeaker announces that they take things 'at absolutely no charge to you', but you'll probably find that the particular PC/video deck/TV/whatever you ask them to take off your hands is the one article that unfortunately they can't take for free because it's too old/too big/too small/too broken/an unusual model/a popular model. They might charge anything from 1000 yen up.
Or you could try taking it to the local second-hand shop: they might agree to put it on their junk shelves. They might even give you 100 yen for it.

Mr. Deepair i would just take it somewhere secluded and pour gasoline on it and light it up.

Is this really news?
If you really need to get rid of a broken PC, just put it out on the street late one night, or better still, take it up to the forest and dump it like everybody else does.

I think the reason the number has dropped is obvious - Japanese people are realising the value of the things they buy and that they DO last longer than the store tells them!! Bit like garages telling you it's necessary to change the oil every 5,000kms or the computer store telling you it's necessary to buy a new computer every two years!
Besides, if you live in an area where there are no trucks that come around for such stuff, and live in the city, the stores will ask you to pay THEM to get rid of it! Alternatively, you could melt it down and collect the gold from it! Probably enough to buy a burger and coke at Maccy D's!

my old box is self-made and my old monitor is a big 19 inch crt with no recycle mark. it would cost me 6000 plus shipping to take them away.
where is a good spot in tokyo to dump em? i would prefer somewhere on the street rather than tokyo bay.
