They should put up bins in electronics shops or shopping centers that will collect those unused/unwanted phones. They have these in the Philippines. It makes a good scene for a movie too.

I would gladly sell my old phones.

I wonder if they can recycle tantalum, that may be more important than the gold.

Sounds like another losing proposition. It would cost much more to retrieve the metals from cell phones than what they would get out of them. Another not well thought out plan from the government of Japan.

already being done, very successful business. Yes it does cost a lot of money to retrieve the metals, but that's why we call them precious metals. Our planet only has a few tons if not sometimes a few hundred kilos of these precious metals which are worth far more than gold, platinum or diamonds.

Well, yeah, all junk electronics should be recycled. It's a tidy little business and it does make a profit. Plus, electronic waste should not go in a landfill. That makes a big mess.

People hang on to their old mobiles for various reasons. An important one is probably because they are worried their personal data falls in the wrong hands.

Hell, the US will send you our old cell phones. I'd rather see it get recycled in Japan rather then the appalling "recycling" that's done in china.
