Docomo launches free Wi-Fi on Mount Fuji

It should be fun swerving around people with their eyes transfixed on a smartphone up a mountain.

More free wi-fi in areas where most people actually live, work and travel would be nice.

Thank god. Another place where friends and families can go to together and ignore one another as they check their messages.

I think this is stupid... as if we don´t have enough iphone zombies already, staring at their screens and ignoring each other. People who want to share their photos can do that very well after they return from their climb.

Being on top of the big girl is a moment in someones life, so its nice that they can upload it immeditely to facetube. Might also stop them ask me to tether 'em, which I'm happy to do. Fooj has long since past being a normal mountain, so I don't really have a problem with it.

Mount Fuji is a bit far to go to check my email, but it's a step in the right direction!

BTW Wakarimasen....fu....isnt 4.

Can I be the pissed off foreigner that gets mad that there is no free WiFi in Yodobashi Camera, the Japanese mecca of technology, yet you can get it on Mount Fuji?

I dunno... maybe climbers could just pry their eyes off of their phone for a second, look around, and say "Holy hell, I'm on top of Mount Fuji right now! That's pretty special! Maybe I should take the view in and connect with the moment."

I'm not totally against the idea, mind you, but maybe make a designated area, like a little heated shack, where people can update their Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Gryzzl / what-have-you, and keep some areas strictly "no stopping and staring at your phones" zones. (maybe that's the plan anyway...)

Well, one can see the point of having free WiFi on Mt Fuji. It is a mountain, after all and someone might get into trouble up there.

Except where there are paved roads to 12,000'+ in Colorado, is there any other mountain on Earth as tame as Fuji in summertime?

True. But when is anyone ever alone on Fuji?

I still think they should have installed 4G LTE cellphone "mini towers" on Mt. Fuji so anyone who has a 4G LTE-enabled cellphone can get service. And LTE is WAY faster than Wi-Fi in terms of access speeds.

This article did not state "who" will be paying for that "free" service.

It would be nice if that was also included. That will give the real meaning of "free" to the users.

I've read that there is already LTE coverage on Mt Fuji. I was assuming the WiFi was in addition, and intended to give more flexibility, for example for foreign visitors who may not be hooked up to the phone network.
