DoCoMo, Sony team up to produce Hatsune Miku Xperia smartphone

NTT DoCoMo will soon release a smartphone in collaboration with Hatsune Miku. Known as the Xperia feat. HATSUNE MIKU, the device is slated for release in late September, making it the first ever collaboration between Hatsune Miku and Sony’s Xperia brand, a name some readers might remember, after the company unveiled its mammoth Xperia Z Ultra. This new piece is mainly a nod to Miku’s many fans, but all of the special features and promotions are sure to satisfy anyone with even a passing interest.

Developers have been hinting at a collaboration between DoCoMo and Hatsune Miku for weeks at their site, dx39.net. Originally, the page contained nothing more than an abstract mosaic, but as the product announcement drew near, increasingly more blocks of color were added to the image, until Hatsune Miku was finally depicted clearly on the screen.

The web address itself also acted as a hint. Now that the announcement has been made, it’s obvious that “d” stands for “DoCoMo” and ‘x” for both a cross-over and “Xperia.” Then, the numbers 3 and 9 can be read in Japanese as “mi” and “ku.” This once-teaser site now acts as the main site for DoCoMo’s collaboration with the virtual-idol via their Xperia phone line. All information concerning the phone can be found there and on various social networking sites.

Now, with help from the submissions site, Piapro, the development team hopes to add to the contents of their Xperia feat. HATSUNE MIKU phone by accepting submissions of fan-made jingles and illustrated portraits of Miku, as part of their “Find Your Miku Project.” The full breadth of fan creations will be accessible on the Xperia feat. HATSUNE MIKU as part of a large compilation. General users will be able to browse the works using a simple interface, blending creative sound and illustrations for users everyday enjoyment.

Another special item in the works is a brand new concept CD called MikXperience e.p., a collaboration between Miku’s software developer, Crypton Future Media, and Sony Music Records. Xperia is working closely with the CD’s team of six music creators and six illustrators to establish some level of joint ownership of the works, meaning that the full CD will also be stored on the new smart phone’s memory.

And, in addition to all of these other releases, the Metro Hut, a large-scale media center in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills, will be hosting a special promotion from July 16 to July 21. Every night between 7-11 p.m., visitors with Android smartphones and tablets will be able to download an AR app, which superimposes a large image of Hatsune Miku onto the space around the Metro Hut, giving users the unique experience of witnessing a “live” Miku concert within the space from the screens of their mobile devices.

Anyone looking for more details on these promotions should visit the official site for Xperia feat. HATSUNE MIKU. And those considering purchasing their own Miku smartphone should visit their nearest DoCoMo store, where reservations are now open. But be sure to act quickly–in true Miku style only 39,000 Miku-themed smartphones will be available.
