Awesome, I can't wait!
I've had an unlocked G1 Google/Android phone in Japan for months now and it works great. I had to use a Softbank SIM card since DoCoMo doesn't currently offer a SIM that will work in non-Docomo handsets and they do not release the APN info.
Now hopefully I can unlock this new HTC-03a (Majic) and everything will be just great.
@ ebisen, it's Android, not Linux. Google owns Android.
I also have an iphone and much prefer the G1 Google phone over the iphone. Same would go for this new HTC-03, but possible a little less since it doesn't have a qwerty keyboard like the G1.
It's Linux allright, and while Google has initially bought the company who started it, it isn't by far the only contributor to it (by very faaar). I find it a bit ironical to call it the Google OS...
In one phrase: It wouldn't exist without the Linux running it.
I'm a developer for Android, I'm aware of what it is. We've been working on the Japanese version since last year when the G1 was originally to be the handset used, but now they have decided on the Majic, (HTC-03a)
imacat,
It depends on what you like to do, but honestly, the Android 03a will let you do more and do it easily. I've had a Blackberry for work here in Japan since last year May.
@ebisen - So what's your point? Sure, it's Linux based, so is Apple's OS X. Linux is open source, and the underlying code can be used at will under the terms of the GNU GPL. Tell ya what, develop your own OS from scratch, prove it's actually competent enough to compete, and then maybe myself and others will be impressed by your seemingly natural ability to declare the obvious.
late-ish. I resisted the iphone, Softbank are lame.
As for the Blackberry - read a comment somewhere saying that the bold in Japan was not worth it. The SH-04A was very good though.
The HT 03A or the SH 04A could be the choice to make.
Docomo is still too expensive! 40 or 50 thousand yen for a crummy cellphone? If your company will pay, great! If you have to fork out you cash? It sucks! What are they thinking in such a crummy Japanese faultering economy??

And it's not so much Google as it is Linux - more like: 1% Google and 99% Linux - but it's nice to stick your brand on every possible thing.

which obviously does not apply to mobile phones as they want you to change phones every 6 months.

societymike: Actually I brought a US Nokia E90 into a Docomo shop and was able to buy a Docomo SIM with no problem.

Which would be better, the HT-03A or the Blackberry Bold? Docomo is offering both and I don't know which to choose...

By that logic Linux isn't Linux, it's Unix. Amateurs.
