English Wikipedia hosts three millionth article

WASHINGTON —
The English version of user-generated online encylopedia Wikipedia hosted its three millionth article on Monday—an entry about a Norwegian actress.
Wikipedia announced the milestone on its homepage at en.wikipedia.org. “The English-language Wikipedia thanks its contributors for creating over 3,000,000 articles!” it said.
Wikipedia said the three millionth article was about Beate Eriksen, a 48-year-old Norwegian television and movie actress and film director.
Founded eight years ago, Wikipedia prides itself on allowing anyone with an Internet connection to contribute or edit content.
Wikipedia currently hosts a total of 13 million articles in 260 languages.
Wikipedia is one of the most-visited sites on the Internet and attracts around 65 million visitors a month.

That there are 3 million articles on Wikipedia is a great thing, but why only 3 million?
While being an online resource, with few theoretical limits, Wikipedia maintains a policy of being "encyclopedic", rejecting "trivia", and articles that are not "noteworthy" enough.
Meanwhile Wikipedia's commercial cousin, wikia, which accepts such trivia uses catch copy along the lines of 'you have seen the encylopedia. Now read the "the rest of the library."'
So, while claiming to provide knowledge to everyone for free, by being self-limiting, (limiting itselt to being like an encyclopedia) wikipedia seems to create a market place for commercialising the distribution of knowledge. But then Wikia's source of income is only text adverts. Clever stuff.

3 million misleading articles written by amateurs and full of errors, not to mention liberal bias.
No thanks.

Actually the BBC recently ran an article about how wikipedia is actually more accurate than the Encyclopedia Britannica. As for liberal bias, I suppose that since it is written "by the people" it must mean that the people are liberal.

What does that actually MEAN, anyway? How does an article about a Norwegian actress, or an electronic product, or a town in India have a liberal bias?

to a right-wing republican, everything written by a non right-wing republican qualifies as liberal bias

Wikipedia is like a huge online cyberspace google encyclopedia with more links to other sources of info.
Makes it easy to to access general information fast.
Way to go to Wikipedia. You are a big help with all the info and links you provide.

Well, at first I was pretty disappointed to learn that the guy who founded Wikipedia is originally from the deep south state of Alabama. Of course, it goes without saying that said state is totally a RED one, which is unfortunate to say the least; but on the good side I think that that puts the whole business about the rightists' favourite bogey man, liberal bias, to bed.Anyways, it's a great source of fascinating information about everything under the sun and I use it for a lot of my private lessons and of course also to take down fools who try and play it thick when they ATTEMPT to debate against me.
