Fujitsu begins global packaged sales of SPATIOWL location data cloud service

Fujitsu on Wednesday announced the global launch of a packaged edition of FUJITSU Intelligent Society Solution SPATIOWL, a cloud service that uses location data gathered from sensors and vehicles. Customers that had been unable to take their data overseas can now make use of SPATIOWL services by deploying the packaged edition on a server in their home country.

In addition, the already existing cloud-based SPATIOWL service(1) has been updated to reflect the ways customers have used it to date, with specific functions now individually offered to make available a variety of applications within the service.

More powerful computers, faster networks, and advances in sensor technology have all garnered increased attention on big data. One area of particular interest is using sensors on motor vehicles and digital devices to collect speed and location data that can be used to discover information on traffic and roads, local weather and safety conditions.

Given this, in June 2011, Fujitsu launched SPATIOWL in and outside of Japan as a cloud service that uses location data to provide new forms of added value.

To date, customer data for SPATIOWL has up until now only been housed in Fujitsu's data centers. This, however, has put the service off-limits to certain public institutions and other organizations that for security reasons cannot store data abroad. For organizations such as these, Fujitsu now offers a packaged edition that they can operate in secure datacenters in their own countries.

SPATIOWL's cloud-based service offerings have been updated to give customers a choice of specific features as optional services, which they can combine into a service tailor-made to their particular needs.
