Interesting technology, but I don't see how they are going to be able to mass produce things like this and get them out to visiting foreigners for the Olympics.

I'd love to see how it translates menu items like BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Louisiana Buffalo Wings, and things like that. Talk about culture shock...

OCR, translating apps are here. Hand scanners have mass produced since 95 ? We had one at work in year 2000, crap quality, but it was reading aloud English words (via a denshi jisho). The job is only integrating them in a cheesy gadget.

'could be ready for the 2020 Olympics'. LOL, every restaurant and noodle bar in Tokyo could have had its menu translated by then. The result will be just as appetizing. Some ghoulish translation like, 'Spilled cow guts of the sautee in sauce of salted spoiled soybeans or Itarian haabu.

Given the quality of current machine translations from Japanese to English, I'm not too excited about this.
