I find the whole idea of underwater cables fascinating. Despite the advances in tech, the world is still basically connected by giant extension cords running along the seabed.

Doesn't some ship sail along planting it down?

Good news about the new cable. Bring it on!
"The CIA likes to cut into them, to listen in?"
Why would they even need to do that, since Google has helpfully acceded to nearly every governmental request for personal data information in the past? "Special access" to You Tube accounts, Gmail records and other "private" transmissions? "No problem!"
And if you think companies like KDDI, China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Malaysia's Global Transit, and Singapore's SingTel have a policy of denying personal information access requests whenever The Man comes a knockin', well, that's just nuts!
Why people automatically think that everything you put on the internet MUST be personal and private is beyond me...

A remote operated vehicle which is essentially an unmanned submarine is used to bury the fiber optic cable under the ocean floor therefore this keeps the sharks, fishing boats, rock slides, and currents etc. from affecting the cables. It also makes it difficult for intelligence agencies like the CIA etc. to find the cables and tap into them. However like everything else in life there are no guarantees.

Pretty sure the CIA's junction boxes are included in the blueprints.

Japan is an island country. No need to be connected to any country. No good for national secutiry.

The world existed before the Internet was invented. Hence the old school stuff.

Better tools for sniffing Japan's government.

I suppose it depends on how you qualify 'nearly every governmental request', but that seems like exaggeration to me: https://www.google.com/transparencyreport/userdatarequests/

Hope they run a line to Australia, and that this all results in unlimited data plans! (A guy can wish)
