They believed that Windows’ drawbacks were discouraging people from spending even more time online, where they could click on ads sold by Google.

Now it is a showtime for Google to approach both Microsoft and Apple.

To address the perceived problem, Google announced its plans in July 2009 for a Chrome-based operating system that would enable computers to turn on in a matter of seconds and encourage more web surfing.

I'm a Windows user and my usage of PC is 100% online. If they provide free online storage for keeping files(not only documents) as easy as file system using PCs then one can consider this Chromebook. Other than this, people will hardly motivated.

Microsoft for spreadsheets , Apple for Graphics , Google for adverts , it's all good , remember when we all had to carry around big bulky phones with the antenna sticking out of the back pack .

Google would have not become too-be-to-failure like it has been today, without American investment and consultant firms. They have desired to pump Google's stock values as high as possible by different manipulation methods. That is a fundamental mechanism of the free market elements. From the current investment and product development strategies, Google empire will soon overpass even to Wal-Mart retailer in sales revenues and the global network. Apple has created i-concept to drive global customers crazy into buying any new released models because Steve Jobs has learned some psycho impacts on "early birds" and "upscale consumers". I have owned some iPhone, iPad, iPod, and iBook, everyone looks at me and say - you look cool. Microsoft has created its Window OS versions to desire the largest shares in the global software market, but it has changed such vision by extending over other sectors to compete with Google, Apple. Now, we can see Google has formulated its global hegemony from free concepts to loyalty payments. It has understood the concept of No free lunch. That means - I feed you free now, but when you get addicted to my meals, you need to pay. It is a simple vision. But Google has dominated or mastered over other American giants.

Until the electric power generation situation can be stabilized, a stand-alone laptop with reasonably long battery life will be essential for working in Tokyo this summer. Any device that is dependent on any external functions, be it software, OS or even electric power, cannot be relied upon. Likewise for data security. I'm not really convinced that Google's solutions have much to offer in terms of performance or cost of operation. Computer prices have come down enough that Windows or Mac OS machines are affordable.

I wonder if Japan will be as hot on releasing this as they are most other goods from overseas? If so, I look forward to seeing a squeaking tarento pretending they know what this is in about five years' time.

So wherever you go (the subway, the rural areas, etc) you need to have an internet connection just to get it working? I really can't see that working in Japan, where public wifi hotspots are so lacking.

It won't be released in japan for a while. The local "state of the art" "cutting edge" electronics companies have already been embarrassed enough by samsung galaxy range and apple range.

How is it a deal if you pay $20 at month for 3 years or $720 for a $350 laptop even it is replace at the end of that time?
