As I understand, it's quite difficult or impossible to get a patent for your own device these days, because you need multiple patents for the various things you might engineer to use in it. It can be prohibitively expensive. Not sure if that goes for all countries or just Japan.
The main issue in patent "reform" has been over "first to file" (Europe and Japan) vs. "first to invent" (the U.S. system). Why doesn't this article even mention this issue? A Japanese inventor I know really wants the US system here.
