Sometime is really hard to find landmark in some area, if we couldn't find the landmark we can easily get disoriented. With the help of Google street view is really useful since we can get preview of the area we will visit. It save my time lot, I believe it work for other people as well.
Yes, I love it. You can use your iPhone or Google Android phone (HT3 Docomo) and pull up google maps right on your phone and use it as navigation and find where you need to go.
I totally agree with you, fds. I think the salient issue is portrait rights.
Google has already built a very good face-recognition algorithm into Picasa. All they need to do is run the street view images through that software and blur the faces it finds.
Maybe the real reason so many of Japan`s city officials wanted Google banned was because it wiol clearly reveal to the rest of the world the real "beauties" of life here - the ugliness of its cities, and the poor quality of life of Japanese people.
^^ What world are you living in "realist"? Your "reality" is nowhere near real. Quality of life in japan isn't bad at all. Go visit the rest of the world.
Considering the total absence of privacy in Japan anyway, the inadequacies of domestic privacy protections would only be highlighted in any legal action. Couldn't show Japan up as being less than perfect, could we? Lift carpet, sweep dirt under. All is "Wa!" again now.

I can still see pictures of friends in Japan who have their faces clearly visible on Google maps. Clear as day.

if you are out in public in plain view, how can there be an expectation of privacy?

Do the same people who complain about Google Street View also complain about 24-7 CCTV videotaping?
