Kinda silly that you get more 'eco-points' when you buy a larger TV that took more energy and materials to make, more energy to run, and ultimately more energy to recycle or dispose of.

It looks like electronics makers have been contributing to the LDP coffers. Since the Beijing Olympics they have been facing a huge glut of unsold merchandise. There is also a growing sense that when July 2011 rolls around millions of households will still not have upgraded to digital TVs and will scream bloody murder when their CRT screens go blank. They powers that be clearly want to avoid their rage. And PS: I am thinking to apply a strip of tape over the upper right corner of my TV screen so I don't have to see the stupid "Anarogu" displayed on everything I watch.

I already have a digital TV! Show me the money!

So the early adopters of "Eco-friendly" and initially very expensive technology actually pay twice - uh ! Once the premium of higher price, second usually still not well developed and standardized products and on top of that miss on "govermento" candies in a form of points! Where they will take this money from? From my taxes? I just bought LCD-TV last Christmas.

I don't get this. People are being encouraged to buy 'bigger and better'... in the name of saving the environment?? Isn't that, like, encouraging unnecessary consumerism?

We're seriously considering not buying a new telly when our old analogue one goes kerphutt. Not enough worth watching apart from the news, and that's depressing.

"a subsidy program aimed at promoting environmentally friendly household appliances" - Surely the payouts should be the other way around, more money for the smaller, more environmentally friendly sets? Or is this just a nice tax break for the rich who can afford to put a 46+" TV in their living room...

    And why only TVs?

Just the traditional 'government supports business, supports government' play in action, this time with added 'eco'.

Well, time to get the new telly then. And if I get a big telly and loads of points I can eco some more with another appliance bought with the points!

Eco points for buying TVs that consume more power?

  • hokkaidoguy at 09:17 PM JST - 12th May

    Consume more power than what?

A modern 40" LCD consumes slightly less than the average 30" CRT. Significantly less if you dim the backlight. Also uses less energy to produce - especially if you factor shipping into the equation.

Probably doesn't matter. The Japanese government could be handing out free puppies to orphans and people here would still find something to complain about.

hokkaidoguy. This is tax money. We all pay it. This is eco tax. You get more eco tax credits if you buy a larger TV set than a smaller one. Large ones consume more power than smaller ones. What is eco-friendly about that? More tax money goes back to wealthier people who can offord huge power-guzzling TVs. The Japanese government hands nothing out for free. They use our money, or have you never heard of tax before?

Same here, Cleo. I'd be more interested in getting kickbacks for a new computer screen rather than for a TV I'll rarely use.

Used to purchase other products where? In the same store? It doesn't say!
