Well, I can see how this may help some companies to stand out with brand names that otherwise might overlap with others that have the same reading but different Kanji. And if the company's target audience have nothing to do with a market outside of Japan, why bother about them? Why are you lot such negative nancys.

Have read about this happening in things like Arabic and Chinese. Don't think it's going to be a great idea though. Using different languages for your site addresses is fine, but to use different character encoding...

A nice way of stopping a lot of people visiting your site.

"Always going back instead of moving forward."

It's the logical thing to do, as if you didn't know, Japanese read and write in, er, Japanese. Only western-imperialistics oppose this move.

It seems to me that this will just give businesses a reason to have to buy a few more domain names. They won't eliminate their romanji domains.

Triple888 - but think about it rationally for a second. How many Japanese keyboards and operating systems can type in a western character set with ease? How many Arabic style keyboards / operating systems can do the same? How about Chinese, or Russian? You'll find that most can use English without any troubles. Now switch it the other way around. How many computers in UK, France, India (to move away from the "western imperialists", Saudi Arabia can easily switch to writing in Japanese? The answer is not many due to the different character encoding and language packs that would have to be put onto computers during install.
