"one day it could help the elderly—say by getting a snack or turning the lights off" - really? The successor to the 'clapper'?

As nice as this might sound, the elderly actually need human contact and a friendly furry pet to keep them company. No amount of metal and plastic can change that. What these marvelous robots represent is the elimination of the labor force for repetitive tasks.

I can see it now ,granny asks Ashimo to turn the channel in which Asimo complies and picks up the remote. LoL

Dorky Robot Rain on Parade: This isn't a new ASIMO, this is the latest version of ASIMO's debut in the U.S. The highlighted features were shown to the world over a year ago. ALSO, as cool as ASIMO is, bear in mind that he's primarily remotely controlled and/or guided through practiced routines in familiar environments.

For its performances in front of corporate audiences, it needs a specially prepared surface to move on, half a dozen techs in the background, and a back-up model, just in case...a long, long, way to go before it can handles granny remote...

ASIMO—decked out in a white suit and helmet—stands 1.3 meters tall and weighs in at 50 kg.

Metabolic syndrome :)

A tad overweight by Japanese 'human' standards... close but some ways to go. ;)

I guess if you factor in the suit and helmet then you'd be okay weight wise but since he's got no skin under that suit, well...

Be careful when you meet anyone, First time Robot receptionist appeared in Las Vegas Electronic convention, I bowed (pretending I am a nice old Japanese woman) and talked to it. then my American daughter and her friends made me as a laughstock for a while. You never can tell who is robot or human from now on.
