I bet he'll download 'Japanese for Busy People' and do fine with the beginner lessons, but then eventually give up like most people when it comes time to start memorizing kanji in Level 2.

Or his teacher is a woman and he will end up speaking effeminately :(

Why the assumption that Watson is a man?

Hopefully one day a computer like Watson can be scaled down to the size of a laptop or PC.

Unless society collapses, it's a safe bet that this will happen. The first game boy (black and white!) had more processing power than the computers behind the first trip to the moon.

I figure we'll have a Watson in our pockets (or are you just happy to see me?) within 20 years.

If it's smart enough, it'll switch to learning real Chinese writing.

The problem with Japanese for busy people is that you get bombed with so much vocab in each lesson that you cannot move on unless you do not care to memorize them all.

jisho.org is an excellent source for translations, plus, you can now use an iPad to sketch out chatacters or a wacom pad as I do for photoshop business on a laptop. They really beefed up the site. Check it out.

Watson is really Skynet...

I wonder if Watson will have the same issue as the rest of us non-native Japanese speakers?

10 seconds of shocked, slack-jawed silence followed by a Pidgin English response. Then finally a compliment on our ability and the Top 4 foreigner questions: Where, When, How Long and Why?

Jyouzu!!

That reaction goes mostly away after you reach a certain level.

I'd like to think that, but I suspect it goes away when you reach a certain age.

Interesting viewpoint. I never thought about that.
