Imperial Hotel to install new Plasmacluster Ion generating unit system
Technology ( 7 )
TOKYO —
In an effort to provide its patrons with an optimum environment, Tokyo’s 119-year-old Imperial Hotel will install newly developed Plasmacluster Ion generating unit systems in all its 7th foor guestrooms and in its buffet restaurant, the Imperial Viking Sal, in early July, with other areas of the hotel to follow in the coming months.
The state-of-the-art Plasmacluster Ion technology, developed by Sharp Corp, will allow the hotel to maintain a healthier, cleaner and more ideal caliber of air quality. Using the existing heating and air conditioning to release highly concentrated Plasmacluster Ions (7,000 ions/cm3), the ions not only strongly inactivate and eliminate airborne viruses, mold and allergens, but also cigarette odors on curtains and sofas and sweaty odors on clothing.
In addition to its low energy consumption, the new system requires no dedicated
fans, and fits easily into air conditioning ducts saving space. Units can also be combined to
meet the capacity of larger rooms. The Imperial and Sharp conducted Plasmacluster Ion
concentration measurements in guestrooms and the buffet restaurant in order to arrive at a
solution that matches The Imperial’s specific needs.

Does this stuff really work or have they been reading too many Japanese housewife magazines?

Some possibly independent reviews here: http://effectmeasure.blogspot.com/2005/06/sharp-marketing.html http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/25784.php http://www.allergytech.com/sharpplasmaclusterion.htm http://www.huliq.com/29463/sharp-proves-effectiveness-of-plasmacluster-ions-1-in-eliminating-serratia-bacteria
Not exactly real-world conditions, but certainly they are making the most out of a great marketing opportunity.

Moderator, the Imperial Hotel is NOT 119 years old. The original 1890 wooden Imperial hotel was replaced by a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923. It lasted until 1968 when most of the hotel was demolished. Only the facade and pool were moved to a museum in Nagoya. The current Imperial hotel was built after 1968!

There have been ionization air cleaners for quite a while now. In simple terms, the ions stick to airborne particles and eventually to the walls or other surfaces.
I gave one to a friend who is a heavy smoker. He was happy to have clear air, but he didn't like having to scrub and re-paint the walls every year.

JohnBecker, and how are these ions floating around freely? I always thought that they tend to stick to their counterions, silly me

The Hotel as a Hotel is 119 years old. The building is not. The article isn't exactly clear, but I'd hesitate to call it dead wrong.
